Margaret Napangardi Lewis
Born: 1952, Mt Doreen Station, NT Domicile: Nyrippi, North West of Alice Springs Language: Warlpiri Margaret Napangardi Lewis was born at Mt. Doreen Station in the Northern Territory and grew-up with her two brothers and three sisters around Nyrippi in the Simpson Desert of Central Australia. Margaret was initially taught painting by her Father, Paddy Japanangka Lewis, the celebrated Yuendemu artist. In 1978 Margaret participated with other Yuendemu women in learning the art of Batik-making. Since that time Margaret's work has evolved into several unique styles which relate to her inherited Dreaming stories. Margaret Napangardi Lewis is the sister of Dorothy Napangardi Robertson and the mother of artist and musician Gordon Robertson Jangala. |
